Disposable Cutlery – cutting through the clutter
Saturday April 17, 2021 | By Rashi Goel
In the past, when you wanted to have a big party, you probably didn’t think twice about using the convenient use-and-throw cutlery options instead of reusable ones which would have meant a lot of dirty dishes after the party. Plastic spoons and thermocol plates used to be considered the only affordable option to use at large-scale events like weddings, concerts and festivals.
But now, times are changing! People today realise that, whatever the cost, we cannot afford to keep creating single-use clutter. People are aware of the problem caused by cheap, disposable plastic and are eager to choose better options. Luckily, as consumers and purchase influencers, there are many great options available today that are also cost-effective. Let’s look at a few popular ones.
Ecoware
Made of plant waste such as sugarcane bagasse, Ecoware’s wide selection of disposable tableware is chemical-free, biodegradable and compostable. The well-priced products include bowls, plates, spoons, forks, glasses and paper cups. (Cover Image credits: Ecoware)
Pappco Greenware:
Another company that manufactures biodegradable and compostable tableware made from plant fibres, Pappco specialises in food packaging containers such as pizza and cake boxes, take-away containers, sauce cups, paper bags, etc. They also have a patented design for compostable coffee cup lids.
Earthens
Made from Areca palm or betel nut tree, these classy light brown plates are 100% natural, biodegradable, and compostable, besides being super functional. The brand offers plates and bowls in a variety of sizes and creative shapes.
An added feature of these beautiful, minimalistic plates from Earthens is that they offer guilt-free disposal.
Magnus Leaf Dinnerware
Like the above, Magnus leaf dinnerware is made without harmful pesticides or chemicals. No trees are cut as they use the fallen sheaths of the Areca palm tree. The brand also offers spoons and fruit picks besides plates and bowls in various sizes.
Ediblepro:
The name says it all. This edible cutlery made of grains, pulses and millets is becoming increasingly popular, and for a good reason too. For those who are not adventurous enough to eat it, it is also completely biodegradable. Ediblepro currently offers bowls and spoons and will soon be launching edible beverage cups, which is good news for us “chai-biskut” lovers.

While the main enemy is single-use plastic, we must mention that improper disposal of any alternative is equally bad. A compostable item that ends up in a landfill produces methane, a major contributor to global warming.
Globally, packaging organisations are developing reusable packaging specifically for large scale events such as music festivals. This is a great alternative to single-use. Photo by Globelet Reusable on Unsplash
The best choice would always be to use reusable dinnerware rather than single-use, but if you must have disposables at your event, choose wisely, and please ensure proper waste management at the end.
